German Red Cabbage

Ingredients

  • 1 medium onion, halved and sliced thinly
  • 1 medium apple, sliced thinly
  • 1 medium head red cabbage, shredded (about 8 cups)
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Directions

  1. In a large Dutch oven with oil, cook and stir onion and apple over medium heat until onion is tender, about 5 minutes.
  2. Stir in remaining ingredients; cook, covered on low until cabbage is tender, about 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
